Icons are how we identify an application among the carefully arranged clutter on our phones. Some of them hidden and deeper meanings. While you might be using a handful of apps everyday, you might be surprised when you can’t find the icon for the app you installed earlier. That’s what’s happening to many Android phone owners who often talk about missing app icons. So we decided to take a closer look at this problem.

There are two issues at hand, and I’ll be addressing both. You can see the app in the app drawer, but it’s missing from the home screen. The app icon is missing everywhere or displays an ‘Android’ logo instead of the app logo.

Note: I’m assuming you’ve already performed basic tests like restarting the phone and updating/reinstalling the app in question.

Let’s start.

1. Add to Home Screen

Power users can move to the next point, but those new to Android or the smartphone world should read it once. You may have deleted the app icon, and not the app itself, from the home screen.

Open the App Drawer and look for the missing app and press and hold until you see the home screen in the background. Move and drop to create a new application icon on your home screen.

When you talk about the home screen, you could have moved the app to a folder and you’re just looking in the wrong place. The same can also be true for the application drawer.

2. Hidden Applications

Do you or someone with access to your phone hide the app? Most pitches offer this feature to hide apps. The setting location will differ depending on the launcher app you are using, but they are generally easy to find.

Tap and wait anywhere on the home screen to find the launcher configuration. Unhide the app and see if the app icon is visible now.

3. Disabled application

An error or your Kiddo may have accidentally disabled the app, so it is no longer active. It’s not the same as uninstalling an app. It’s there, but it’s just disabled and therefore unusable, leading to the missing app icon issue.

Open values and under Manage app, find the app whose icon is missing, and tap to open it. Is it an option to Start / Enable the annotated app? It may be under the App Info menu, depending on your phone make and model. If so, the app will most likely be disabled and you need to enable it again.

4. Pack Icon

One of the things that distinguishes Android from iOS is customizations. One way to do this is by using an icon pack. What you do is change the appearance of the selected app icon, which makes it unrecognizable from time to time. Are you using one? An icon pack app can also be included when you have installed some other launcher app or topic. That’s another thing about Android.

5. Launcher Problem

A launcher is like accessing the app drawer, notifications and other areas or aspects of the smartphone. We covered some great Android launchers in GT. Your pitcher may be acting. A recent update might be responsible in which case, switch to the default launcher and check if the app icons are still missing.

Try zeroing the launcher to see if incorrect data is responsible. Open Setup and go to Manage App or App List. You are looking for a third-party or standard pitcher here. Samsung calls it TouchWiz, for example. Open it, tap Storage, and select Clear Data.

You should also try clearing the launcher app’s own cache and data. Go back to the previous screen and select Clear Data at the bottom of the screen and tap Clear All Data.

On a related note, updating the Play Store launcher can also help.

6. Application and Cache Data

It will clear cache and app data whose icon is missing in the same way it cleared launcher app data in the previous point. Open Settings and find the ‘Missing Icon’ app in Manage App. Click Clear Data at the bottom of the screen and select Clear All Data.

missing missing

We don’t pay enough attention to icons unless they’re missing from our Android phones. After all, that’s how we identified an app and opened it. How do you interact with an app if you can’t find it? Hope the above points help you to restore the missing app icons.

If nothing else works, then I would suggest you shape your smartphone after taking a backup, but that’s the last thing I would suggest to anyone. As always, if you found another way to fix the issue, please let me share with the rest of us in the comments below. It could help someone else.
